Episode description
CREATIVE MIND: The Power of Thought, Universal Mind and the Secret Law of Creation — Ernest S. Holmes.
What if your thoughts are not merely reflections of your reality, but active forces in the creation of your experience?
In this powerful episode of The Secret of Success Podcast, we explore Creative Mind by Ernest S. Holmes, one of the important early works of the New Thought movement. Holmes presents a profound philosophy of consciousness, arguing that the individual mind is connected with a greater Universal Mind and that thought, belief, expectation, and spoken words participate in the creative process. Rather than treating manifestation as simply wishing for material possessions, Holmes explores the deeper spiritual principles behind creation, personal freedom, prosperity, healing, happiness, and self-mastery. The book moves from metaphysical principles to practical exercises designed to transform consciousness.
INTRODUCTION
Holmes introduces his central purpose: to bring greater understanding to the laws governing human life. He argues that people can become less controlled by external circumstances by discovering the creative power operating through their own consciousness. The Introduction establishes the foundation for the entire book: understanding the nature of Mind is essential to understanding the nature of life.
PART 1 — IN THE BEGINNING
IN THE BEGINNING: Holmes begins with the nature of Spirit and creation. He asks what existed before the visible universe and proposes that Spirit, or Universal Intelligence, is the ultimate creative source. From this comes the principle that consciousness precedes manifestation. The invisible becomes the foundation of the visible, making thought and spiritual consciousness central to the creative process.
A PRINCIPLE THAT CAN BE PROVEN: Holmes moves from metaphysical philosophy toward practical experience. He proposes that belief influences experience and that the creative law can be demonstrated through the individual's own life. The principle is simple: consciousness establishes patterns that eventually express themselves in experience.
THE WORD GOING FORTH: The “Word” represents thought expressed through consciousness. Holmes teaches that the creative process begins with an idea or mental pattern before it appears as an external condition. This chapter is especially important for understanding affirmations, declarations, visualization, and the Law of Attraction.
WHY AND WHAT IS MAN? Holmes asks what human beings are and what their purpose is. He presents humanity as an individualized expression of Universal Life. The individual is therefore both unique and connected to something infinitely greater.
THE LAW OF OUR LIVES: Universal Law operates through every individual. Holmes argues that we are centers of creative thought within the greater Universal Mind. The quality of our consciousness determines the patterns through which this creative law operates in our lives.
MAN'S PART: Human beings do not create the universal law itself; they learn to cooperate with it. Our responsibility is to consciously direct thought, develop faith, and align ourselves with the good we wish to express.
BONDAGE AND FREEDOM: Holmes identifies ignorance and limiting beliefs as major sources of bondage. Freedom begins when we recognize that many limitations are mental patterns rather than permanent realities. Changing consciousness therefore becomes a path toward greater personal freedom.
THE WORD: Holmes returns to the creative power of thought and speech. Just as the Divine Word represents creative activity in the universe, the individual's word becomes a creative influence within personal experience.
MAN WHO HAS ARRIVED: The “arrived” individual is someone who has gained mastery over thought and is no longer completely controlled by circumstances. Such a person develops inner certainty, faith, discipline, and a greater awareness of the creative power within.
POWER WE HAVE WITHIN US: Holmes emphasizes the enormous potential available through consciousness. The individual possesses access to a greater creative power and can determine how much of that power is expressed. The challenge is to remove the mental barriers that prevent its expression.
INDIVIDUAL IDEAS: Ideas become creative forces when they are consistently held in consciousness. Holmes encourages us to examine our dominant beliefs about success, money, health, relationships, and possibility because persistent ideas tend to shape our attitudes and actions.
REASON FOR THE UNIVERSE: Holmes expands the discussion beyond personal manifestation and asks why the universe exists. He sees creation as an ongoing expression of Life and Intelligence, with humanity participating in that larger process of growth and self-expression.
MIND IN ACTION: Mind is not passive. It is continually expressing itself through thought, emotion, decisions, behavior, and experience. Holmes presents external conditions as expressions of deeper mental patterns.
ACTION AND REACTION: The principle of cause and effect operates throughout life. Thoughts and beliefs produce reactions and consequences. Understanding this law allows the individual to become more deliberate about the mental causes being established.
ARRIVING AT A HIGH CONSCIOUSNESS: Holmes encourages the development of a higher level of awareness based on faith, understanding, confidence, and spiritual realization. The goal is not merely to acquire things but to become the kind of person capable of expressing greater possibilities.
OUTER SUGGESTIONS: The external world constantly supplies suggestions—fear, criticism, pessimism, social expectations, and limitation. Holmes teaches the importance of becoming selective about which ideas we accept into consciousness.
USE OF THE GREATER CONSCIOUSNESS: The individual can consciously turn toward the greater Universal Mind for strength, guidance, and creative inspiration. Instead of relying exclusively upon personal effort, we learn to cooperate with a greater intelligence.
GREATER CONSCIOUSNESS: Holmes develops the idea that individual consciousness is connected with Universal Consciousness. Recognizing this unity becomes a source of confidence and spiritual power.
PERFECT UNIVERSE: Holmes presents the universe as fundamentally governed by order and law. The challenge is therefore not to fight reality blindly, but to understand the laws through which life operates and learn to cooperate with them.
ABOUT STRUGGLE—KARMA: The first part concludes with an examination of struggle, cause and effect, and karma. Holmes explores how previous thought and action influence present conditions while emphasizing the possibility of creating a different future through transformed consciousness.
PART 2 — PRACTICE
INTRODUCTORY: Holmes now moves from theory to application. The practitioner must learn to consciously recognize himself as a center of divine activity. Understanding becomes valuable only when it is translated into daily practice.
SAME POWER USED IN TWO WAYS: The creative power is universal, but it can be directed consciously or unconsciously. The same mental mechanism can reinforce fear and limitation or confidence and possibility.
HEALING THE SICK: Holmes explores the relationship between consciousness and healing from the perspective of New Thought metaphysics. This reflects the spiritual-healing beliefs of his era and should be understood historically rather than as a substitute for modern medical treatment.
DENIALS: Denial involves mentally withdrawing agreement from limitation. Instead of repeatedly reinforcing fear, lack, or failure, the practitioner learns to refuse to give these conditions permanent authority over consciousness.
USE OF AFFIRMATIONS: Affirmations are used to establish constructive mental patterns. For Holmes, their power lies not merely in repeating words but in cultivating genuine acceptance of the principle being affirmed.
HIGHEST ATTITUDE OF MIND: Faith, confidence, peace, expectancy, and gratitude become the preferred mental atmosphere. The objective is to cultivate an inner state that supports constructive action.
NON-RESISTANCE: Holmes teaches that excessive resistance can strengthen our identification with unwanted conditions. Non-resistance means releasing the struggle and redirecting consciousness toward the desired good.
BE ALIVE: Spiritual awareness should increase participation in life, not decrease it. Holmes encourages vitality, enthusiasm, creativity, and active engagement.
BE HAPPY: Happiness becomes a conscious choice and practice rather than something entirely dependent upon circumstances.
LIVE IN THE PRESENT: The present moment is where consciousness can actually be changed. Instead of remaining trapped in past experiences or anxiety about the future, Holmes encourages conscious attention to the possibilities available now.
SEE THE GOOD IN ALL THINGS: The practitioner trains attention toward opportunity, growth, beauty, and constructive possibilities. This is not necessarily a denial of difficulty, but a deliberate choice about what receives the mind's attention.
BE EXPECTANT: Expectation becomes a powerful mental force. When we expect possibility rather than failure, our perception, behavior, persistence, and decisions begin to change.
EXPANDING OUR THOUGHT: Holmes challenges us to think beyond established limitations. Expansion begins by imagining possibilities that exceed our current circumstances.
POWER OF A TREATMENT: Holmes introduces affirmative spiritual treatment: concentrated thought, prayer, and realization directed toward a desired condition. The purpose is to establish a new mental acceptance.
